Scientists expected the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity to run for three months, but three years later the hardy rovers are still operating. The Mars Phoenix Lander is set to arrive on Mars in late May 2008. The lander will study the polar region using a robotic arm to dig through the protective top layer of soil to the ice below. The soil and ice samples will be delivered to the lander platform for scientific analysis. During the week of May 18-24, NASA-TV looks back at Mars exploration and at what the future holds.
