NASA Moon Orbiter: Extreme Close-up of Apollo 17 Landing Site
Get another great view of the Apollo17 landing site - courtesy of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).
The sharp-shooting Moon-orbiting craft made a recent overflight of the touchdown zone of lunar module Challenger back in December 1972.
Thanks to a lower orbit around the Moon, the LRO imagery is more than two times better resolution than previously acquired.
The descent stage of the lunar module Challenger is clearly visible and the craft's outstretched legs are also distinguishable.
Tracks are clearly visible and can be followed to the east, where astronauts Jack Schmitt and Gene Cernan set up the Surface Electrical Properties (SEP) experiment.
