America’s space program has expanded our understanding of the Earth and our universe, contributed to our national security, stimulated our economy, strengthened our competitive position in the global marketplace, improved our standard of living and inspired humanity to reach for the stars. It has done so for 50 years based on broad public support and strong bi-partisan political leadership.
The Coalition for Space Exploration calls upon all candidates for the Office of President of the United States to recognize the value of our nation’s investment in space and to voice their support for continued American leadership in exploration that will take humans back to the moon and on to Mars. Great nations invest in their future to the betterment of their people and humankind. They value technological innovation. They inspire younger generations to pursue educational excellence. They promote scientific research and discovery. America’s investment in NASA and space exploration – less than 1 percent of total annual federal spending – contributes to the accomplishment of these worthy goals.
America’s leadership role in space exploration cannot be taken for granted. Emerging space nations and other countries have clearly outlined their future space ambitions. We can ill-afford to stagnate and weaken our commitment to an exploration agenda that will transform our world and benefit our citizens.
We are confident that our nation’s elected officials – especially those who would serve in the White House and in Congress – will exercise vision and determination taking America boldly into a future leaving a legacy of tremendous promise, unlimited potential and unparalleled progress.
